Il Periodico della Società Storica Comense 2023-2024 (anno LXVIII) contiene:

This work describes a site on Lake Como – a remote place both from a geographical and historic point of view –, the history of its owners and its transformations over the centuries (15th through 19th century). It tells the story of its various owners: innkeepers, clergymen, merchants, credit operators, important families from Como as well as unknown provincial families. It describes the local society and many minorcharacters: language teachers and book owners, bakers and small merchants we get to know through disputed inheritances, patriotic and political activities and even Carbonari gatherings. A series of important digressions describe well-known Como households and their estates, the spread of culture through books thanks to the growth of movable type print, and deal with some facets of credit and of the family institution. The wealth of original notarial sources quoted therein could contribute to further studies in other fields.

This essay is essentially composed of a collection of documents concerning the family of Tommaso, Bernardino, Donato and Giacomo Rodari, who were sculptors born in a small village on Lake Lugano called Maroggia. The analysis of payments, expense notes and various documents made it possible to clarify and investigate some aspects related to the life and activity of these artists, whose works – but especially those of Tommaso and Giacomo – executed in Como in the 1480s helped the transition – in that city – from a still late Gothic statuary to sculptures close to the style visible in the most central areas of the State of Milan. At the same time, the analysis of the documents has also shedlight on the social and economic dynamics that characterized a construction site as important as that for the construction of the new Cathedral of Como.

emersi dagli archivi parrocchiali.

The study focuses on three painters that lived between the 17th and 18th century and worked, as
far as it is known, in the Alto Lario territory. The first two seem to be unknown to historical
records. Their names emerged from parish archives. They are Domenico Codurada, who in
1669 painted a ‘‘Last Supper’’ in the presbytery of the parish church of Vercana, and Giovanni
Arrigoni, who between 1735 and 1736 created the main altarpiece and three other paintings for
the vice-parish church of Germasino. No biographical information has been found for either of
them. The name of the third painter, however, is already known: Giuseppe Mancini from Dongo,
of whom this article presents the first work that can be certainly identified as his. It is preserved in
the vice-parish church of Germasino and shows Our Lady of Sorrows, painted in 1717. A biographical in-depth study on Mancini is also proposed.

4. Tiziano RAMAGNANO, Il «porto dell’anima». Lettere di Giulio Pinchetti all’amico Niccolò Sardi (1866-1869), pp. 299-344

The article focuses on the section of Giulio Pinchetti’s correspondence addressed exclusively to
his friend and Garibaldian hero Niccolo` Sardi from Varazze: a collection of forty letters exchanged
between 1866 and 1869, serving as a barometer not only of the poetics and psychology of the
‘scapigliato’ poet from Como but also of an entire generation marked by the dramas, hopes,
and contradictions of post-unification Italy. A diary, an authentic epistolary novel with Foscolian
tones, in which the anger, urgency, and disillusionment of a real-life Ortis emerge in all their fierce polemic passion and touching fragility.

5. Rosaria MARCHESI, Gli ultimi littoriali, pp.345-360

dovette sopperire a mancati finanziamenti promessi.

Between 10 and 17 May 1942 Como hosted the last “Women’s Littoriali of culture, art and sport”. The four conferences and cultural exhibitions were held in the prestigious venue of Villa Olmo, the concerts were hosted at the “Carducci” Institute, then the Institute of Fascist Culture, the sports competitions had various venues: some city gyms (Negretti and Mariani), the tennis courts of Villa Olmo and Villa d’Este, the covered shooting range, the Somalvico after-work club and the Sinigaglia stadium.
For the city it was a moment of great ferment and importance, given the political personalities and the large turnout of young people. The young people were at the front and it was decided to give maximum space to the girls. The Littoriali were born in the thirties and, given the era, male. They were, compared to their last edition, much more articulated and demanding also as an organization. In Como among the athletes present was the astronomer Margherita Hack (1922-2013) who, like the previous year, won in the high jump. The essay contains an unpublished testimony of his. The city found itself having excellent media coverage on all the press organs of the time, although then, with the spotlights off, when it was time to take stock of the expenses, unfortunately the Municipality had to make up for the lack of funding promised.
